J. Watine et al., ACUTE HEMORRAGIC COLITIS ASSOCIATED WITH ANTIBIOTICS - RESPONSIBILITYOF KLEBSIELLA-OXYTOCA IN ASSOCIATION WITH CLOSTRIDIUM-DIFFICILE, Medecine et maladies infectieuses, 24(5), 1994, pp. 635-637
Except for pseudomembranous colitis, the pathogeny of colitis associat
ed with antibiotics is still imprecise. Klebsiella oxytoca is supposed
to be responsible for some cases of acute hemorragic colitis. Within
a space of 2 months, we have been observing 2 cases of acute hemorragi
c colitis after a treatment by pristinamycin. In the 2 cases, K. oxyto
ca was isolated by culture from colic biopsy specimens, and the detect
ion of the toxin-A of Clostridium difficile in stools was positive. As
far as we know, this bacterial association has not yet been reported
in this type of colitis. Although the responsibility of this bacterial
association for the colitis has not been clearly established, a more
systematic research on the presence of this bacterial association coul
d make it possible to know its frequency which is probably under-estim
ated.
