Magnetic fields may alter the flexural resonant frequencies of vibrati
ng reeds that possess anisotropic magnetic susceptibility. The magnitu
de of the effect is a quadratic in the field strength. It is also a fu
nction of field orientation, the reed's aspect ratio and Young's modul
us, the vibrational mode, and the magnetic susceptibility tensor. This
phenomenon can provide a direct and extremely sensitive measure of ma
gnetic anisotropy.
