Marine aquaculture in Europe is essentially concerned with salmonids a
nd bass, turbot and gilthead species. Its expansion has been followed
by the appearance of diverse pathologies, namely of an infectious or p
arasitic nature. Among the most common diseases are some which are mor
e specific to the sea environnement and are also seen in wild fish pop
ulations such as vibrosis caused by Vibrio anguillarum and certain par
asitic infections (copepod infestation caused by Lepeophteirus salmoni
s). Other infections are equally rife in fresh water species such as v
iral haemorrhagic septicaemia, MRLC due to a rhabdovirus and furunculo
sis caused by Aeromonas salmonicida. In the last ten years new disease
s have appeared (pasteurellosis caused by Pasteurella piscicida, infec
tious anaemia of Atlantic salmon without a doubt of viral aetiology...
) while some dominant pathologies, still persist. The losses they caus
e represent an important obstacle to the development of fish-farms, be
cause at the present time the methods of control do not allow eradicat
ion.
