A dispersion analysis of six different finite element methods for appr
oximating Maxwell's equations in space is presented. The study is limi
ted to two space dimensions and triangular elements, but all the metho
ds considered can be generalised to three dimensions using prismatic e
lements. Spatial grids consisting of both equilateral and right triang
les are considered.
