This paper describes a new method to achieve high-resolution mass spec
tra in a linear time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Both direct and matr
ix assisted laser desorption/ionization of large molecules are perform
ed on this instrument. Using post-source pulse-focusing a mass resolut
ion of 4600 (FWHM) has been achieved. This technique can correct high
initial ion translational energies as well as long periods of ion form
ation. Therefore it is predestinated to laser desorption/ionization ap
plications. Experimental results will be shown demonstrating the capab
ility of this new instrument to produce high-resolution ion signals. I
n addition, a simple way to calibrate masses is discussed.
