The structure of the liquid semiconductor thallium selenide (Tl2Se) ha
s been determined to the partial structure factor level using the tech
nique of neutron scattering and isotopic substitution. The results sho
w strong hetero-coordination with a Tl-Se closest distance of 3.2 angs
trom, a broad Tl-Tl distance centred at 4.5 angstrom and the Se-Se dis
tance at 4.8 angstrom. The results agree with a structure that is esse
ntially determined by ionic interactions.
