Abstract
The objective of the study was to evaluate economics for the robust br eeds Galloway and Highland Cattle, which are kept in Bavaria. Most inc ome could be achieved by the purchase of female weaned calves. Gallowa ys were sold for 4800 DM and Highland Cattle for 5200 DM. Using on far m marketing, on the average a price of 15 DM per kg carcass weight cou ld be achieved. The gross margin without the costs of the basic ration was for both breeds at 2500 DM per suckler cow and year. A gross marg in higher than 1500 DM could be achieved per suckler cow and year with both breeds. The income per farm reached a value of 1067 DM per suckl er cow and year for Galloways and a value of 932 DM per suckler cow an d year for Highland Cattle. The income per ha was 1220 DM for Galloway s and 868 DM for Highland Cattle. For Galloways a hourly wages of 42 D M and for Highland Cattle a hourly wages of 43 DM could be calculated. In the case of decreasing prices for breeding animals and change to i ntensive carcass production, the variable and fixed costs are covered at carcass prices of 14 DM/kg for Galloways and 16 DM/kg for Highland Cattle, respectively. Therefore a reduction of costs becomes more impo rtant to achieve a sufficient high income even if public subsidies are available.
