INVESTIGATION INTO THE BARRIERS OF HYBRID FORMATION BETWEEN CORCHORUS-CAPSULARIS L AND C-OLITORIUS L

Comparative study of the pollen tube development in the Corchorus olit orius x C. capsularis with fluorescence microscopy revealed the existe nce of pre-zygotic incompatibility only when C. capsularis was used as female. The pollen grains of C. olitorius were found to germinate nor mally on the stigmatic surface of C. capsularis, but the growth of the ir tubes within the style lowed down and finally stopped at the end of the stylar tissue of C. capsularis characterized by the deposition of huge amount of callose bodies at the tip of pollen tube as well as at base of the stylar tissue.
