The applicability of proton transfer reactions involving H3O+ ions to
trace gas analysis of methanol, ethanol and acetone in human breath is
demonstrated, using a conventional Selected ion flow drift tube (SIFD
T). The potential of H3O+ for trace gas analysis lies in the slightly
smaller proton affinity of H2O as compared to those of many organic co
mpounds, thus allowing for non-dissociative proton transfer to these n
eutrals resulting in only one product ion for each neutral trace compo
nent to be analysed.
