The efficient operation of existing plants in the process industries r
equires an adjustment of the technical parameters with respect to chan
ging economic or environmental constraints. In this work a model is pr
esented that enlarges the well known linear optimisation models for jo
int production planning problems, that are typical fbr the process ind
ustries, by integrating byproducts and residues as well as emission ta
xes. With respect to the technical implications of a real world proces
s the model is based on thermodynamic equilibria calculations and ther
efore formulated as a nonlinear optimisation model. The model is imple
mented with the help of the process simulation system ASPEN PLUS and a
pplied as an example to a real world ammonia synthesis plant.
