Based on the mechanism graph representation, a systematic algorithm is
developed for the automatic synthesis of displacement graphs for plan
etary gear trains. First, the graph representation and fundamental rul
es of planetary gear trains are introduced. Next, we propose an algori
thm for the automatic enumeration of the adjacency matrices of the gra
phs of N-link planetary gear trains from those of (N - 1)-link planeta
ry gear trains. The structural codes of graphs is used as a mathematic
al tool to identify graph isomorphism. Finally, a computer program is
developed for the automatic synthesis of nonisomorphic planetary gear
trains. In this paper, an atlas of displacement graphs for one-DOF pla
netary gear trains with up to eight links has been constructed.
