Pm. Jelf et Na. Fleck, THE FAILURE OF COMPOSITE TUBES DUE TO COMBINED COMPRESSION AND TORSION, Journal of Materials Science, 29(11), 1994, pp. 3080-3084
The strength of unidirectional carbon-fibre epoxy laminates has been m
easured for combined compression and shear loading. Failure was by pla
stic microbuckling. The axial compressive strength decreased linearly
to zero as the shear stress parallel to the fibres was increased from
zero to the shear strength. These experimental results support the pre
dictions of Budiansky and Fleck and suggest an average fibre misalignm
ent angle of 2-degrees-3-degrees.
