Zaleski's (1992) estimates of presidential preference for inflation ve
rsus unemployment reject the party cleavage model. Utilizing a differe
nt technique, Siebrand and Swank (1994) provide estimates similar, for
the most part, to Zaleski's. Siebrand and Swank, however, support the
party cleavage model. After offering a rationale for rejecting the pa
rty cleavage model, this reply points out the similarities of the two
competing results.
