V. Krivjansky et al., INDUCTION OF RESPIRATION-DEFICIENT MUTANTS IN SACCHAROMYCES-CEREVISIAE BY CHELERYTHRINE, FEMS microbiology letters, 120(1-2), 1994, pp. 87-91
Chelerythrine and sanguinarine, two structurally related benzo/c/phena
nthridine alkaloids, prevented growth of yeast cells in medium contain
ing either glucose or non-fermentable carbon sources. At concentration
s permitting growth of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, chelerythri
ne, but not sanquinarine, induced cytoplasmic respiration-deficient mu
tants. The petite clones that were analysed exhibited suppressiveness
and contained different fragments of the wild-type mitochondrial genom
