Abstract
Early this century, women teachers' lower pay and status were defended by representing them as transients in teaching with limited capacitie s and experience. This paper compares the rates at which men and women entered and left teaching in New Zealand around the turn of the centu ry. A new analysis of old data also makes it possible to compare male and female teachers' geographical mobility, the rates at which they im proved their formal qualifications, and their membership of the New Ze aland Educational Institute.
