A study has been carried out of the application of SPC at an automotiv
e supplier specializing in the manufacture of small, high-precision in
tegrity metallic components. The technique has been introduced success
fully and a number of benefits realized. However, there are certain op
erational difficulties with its use which may lead to frustration if l
eft unchecked. These include: (a) variation in measurement methods; (b
) lack of a reaction plan to out-of-control points; (c) failure to not
e on the chart any additional samples which have been taken and other
changes to the process; and (d) a failure to undertake gauge variation
studies. These difficulties are discussed together with the means of
resolving them.
