Ti(OC6H4CH3)4 in combination with Et3Al2Cl3 and Et3Al forms an active
catalytic system for oligomerizing ethylene to low molecular weight al
pha-olefins. At room temperature with Ti(OC6H4CH3)4-Et3Al C4-C10 alpha
-olefins are formed. At elevated temperature and under the influence o
f various phosphorus additives Ti(OC6H4CH3)4-Et3Al2Cl3 yields linear o
lefins in the C4-C20 range. Selectivities greater than 97% could be ac
hieved in most cases with the Ti(OR)4-Et3Al2Cl3-additive system.
