A sensor using four magnetoresistors has been developed that can disti
nguish between normal and shearing movements. Empirical equations have
been determined to calculate the values of normal and shearing motion
s from the four sensors' outputs. The use of a miniature coil with an
alternating current substantially reduces thermal drift effects, im pr
oves repeatability and reduces power consumption. The sensor has appro
ximate dimensions of 4 mm x 4 mm x 4 mm an therefore can be considered
relatively miniature.
