This paper deals with eddy current power loss in structural steel, in
the vicinity of cables carrying current in a perpendicular direction.
The configuration is approximated by a long cylinder perpendicular to
a filament current. An analytical method is used. Expressions are prov
ided which describe the frequency dependence of the power loss. The in
fluence of the permeability and the physical dimensions is considered.
Formulae are given for the impedance of the cylinder in different fre
quency regions. Numerical results are presented to show the behavior.
