A DIGITAL 1.2 GBIT SEC VCR FOR A UNIVERSAL RECORDING FORMAT OF HD IMAGE DATA

For post-production purposes a recorder with a playing time of 60 min is needed. Compared to the D-2 recording format, a digital HDTV signal contains 10 times the amount of information that has to be stored on the tape. This article outlines the technical details of a digital VCR developed by BTS that handles data rates of up to 1.2 Gbits/sec and r eports on experiences gained. The steps for selecting an appropriate t ape transport are discussed, as well as the magnetic footprint on tape for the universal recording format jointly proposed by Toshiba Corp. of Japan and BTS GmbH (Germany).
