The eyes of apparently healthy cattle and buffaloes sacrificed for hum
an consumption as well as those necropsied at the necropsy theatre of
the Pathology Division at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Iz
atnagar (650 cattle and 1842 buffaloes) were screened. The conjunctive
of 56 cattle and 166 buffaloes were subjected to histopathological ex
amination. Among these 43 cattle and 173 buffaloes revealed abnormalit
ies in the conjunctiva. The lesions encountered were congestion, hemor
rhage, acute conjunctivitis, subacute conjunctivitis, chronic conjunct
ivitis, pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, dacryoadenitis and prolapse
of the lacrimal gland.
