In a previous study a relationship was indicated between humor and int
imacy; however, the Situational Humor Response Questionnaire, a narrow
measure of humor, was given. In this study for 20 male and 40 female
undergraduates high scores on intimacy were associated with high score
s on the Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale, a broad and comprehens
ive measure, although the relationship was not as strong as that betwe
en scores on intimacy and on the Situational Humor Response Questionna
ire. This discrepancy might be explained by the social nature of intim
acy and differences in the two measures of humor.
