A comparative study of the mass spectral fragmentation patterns of som
e furotropones, furotropilidenes and their metal tricarbonyl complexes
is established and fully discussed. The chromium and iron complexes a
re found to follow a mode of fragmentation which begin with successive
elimination of the three carbonyl groups and the resulting ion peak's
after metal elimination behave in the same manner as their organic li
gands. However, the chromium complexes of furotropilidenes are found t
o follow a mode of fragmentation different from their coresponding iro
n complexes. Generally, the compounds tested show their molecular ion
peaks different from their base peaks.
