The dynamic and static paramagnetic response of DyPO4 has been studied
by neutron inelastic scattering and single-crystal magnetic susceptib
ility measurements. The observed energies and intensities of the magne
tic transitions at 15 and 100 K were used to refine the parameters of
the crystal field potential for Dy3+ ions in DyPO4. The derived crysta
l field level structure provides a basis for explaining the low temper
ature magnetic properties of this compound.
