Abstract
A comparative study of the corrosion resistance in boiling nitric acid has been carried out for P/M and cast AISI 304L and AISI 316L stainle ss steels. The influence of sensitization and acid concentration on th e corrosion rate have been determined. The results are discussed with reference to ASTM A262 (Huey test). Scanning electron microscopy was u sed to study the microstructural characteristics and the corrosion pro ducts. It is shown that the corrosion phenomenon in P/M steels is almo st entirely due to pore induced crevices; a possible corrosion mechani sm for the materials is proposed.
