Through the use of benzoylhydrazide, a Re(V)-oxo species is converted
into the complex [ReN2(ampy)-(tbpy)PPh3]Cl (where thpy = 4,4'-di-tert-
butylbipyridine and ampy = 2-(aminomethyl)pyridine). A precursor to ch
iral Re(I)-tetraamine complexes, [Re(OTf)(ampy)(tbpy)PPh3]OTf (4) is p
repared from the corresponding dinitrogen species through anion metath
esis and oxidation by silver triflate. Compound 4 may be reduced in th
e presence of benzaldehyde to generate the eta2-aldehyde species shown
.
