Kinetic constants and activation parameters of some inorganic reaction
s in solution have been obtained very easily and with great accuracy f
rom variable temperature spectrophotometric kinetic data using a metho
d based on non-isothermal analysis. The reactions studied under variou
s experimental conditions to test the method were the cis-trans isomer
ization of the cation [Pt(PEt3)2(CH3)(C2H5OH)]+ in ethanol and the the
rmal decomposition of the alkyl solvent species trans-[Pt(PEt3)2(n-C4H
9)(CH3OH)]+ to yield the trans-hydride [Pt(PEt3)2(H)(CH3OH)]+ in metha
nol. The results are compared with those obtained by the traditional i
sothermal method. A suitable experimental apparatus and software is de
scribed for routine measurements.
