The results of an electrochemical investigation of the reduction of (e
ta5-C5H5)Mn(CO)3, (eta5-C5H4COOCH3)Mn(CO)3, (eta5-C5H4CH3)Mn(CO)3 and
(eta5-C5H4Cl)Mn(CO)3 are reported. Each compound was characterized wit
h at least a single one-electron EC process. However, for (eta5-C5H4CO
OCH3)Mn(CO)3 and (eta5-C5H4Cl)Mn(CO)3 additional reduction processes w
ere also observed. The first reduction potential of these compounds ex
hibits a potential range of 340 mV and a correlation with the Hammett
parameter (sigma(p)). Voltammetric and IR analysis of the reduced solu
tions indicate that several species are formed upon reduction. A possi
ble reaction scheme is suggested, although isolation of the proposed p
roducts and intermediates for identification has not been possible.
