The evolution of an on-line, model-based optimization system began wit
h the development of steady-state simulators for specific processes. I
t proceeded through development of general purpose steady-state simula
tors with data reconciliation and optimization capabilities. This syst
em, with interfaces to millwide information or data highway systems, e
xecutive software, displays and printers, can provide new and powerful
tools for on-line optimization. Further developments to provide dynam
ic simulation, dynamic data reconciliation and performance attributes
are now underway to improve performance and substantially widen the ar
eas of application.
