Abstract
It is shown that Kerr-lens mode locking of a Ti:sapphire laser, with n o intracavity elements except the laser rod and the dispersion-compens ating prisms, can be made to be completely self-starting. We achieve t his result by carefully designing the resonator to maximize the nonlin ear mode variations and dynamic loss modulation.
