Complexes of the type MCl2L2 [M = Pd(II), Pt(II); L = 2,4,6,-trimethyl
aniline (TMA), 4-fluoroaniline (4FA) and pentafluoroaniline (PFA)] hav
e been synthesized and characterized by microanalyses, infrared, nmr a
nd conductivity techniques. All the complexes have a square-planar geo
metry with the ligands coordinating in the cis-configuration except in
the case of the 4FA and PFA derivatives of PdCl2 which exhibit trans-
configuration. The complexes are non-conducting in DMSO. H-1 nmr spect
ra of the TMA complexes recorded in DMSO-d6 show evidence for slow lig
and exchange. The crystal data of [PdCl2(PFA)2] are presented while, i
n [PdCl2(4FA)2] the sigma and pi influences of the F-substituent on th
e geometry of the aromatic ring are assessed.
