Abstract
The acute phase response is initiated in response to infection or phys ical trauma and is characterized by an increase in the levels of some plasma proteins. Here, Erik Hack and colleagues suggest that the combi ned actions of two of these acute phase proteins, secretory phospholip ase A(2) and C-reactive protein, may serve to promote phagocytosis of injured cells and tissue debris, thereby enhancing inflammation and ti ssue damage.
