Abstract
The quadratic hyperpolarizabilities of a series of diaryls and related systems are studied. Comparison between experimental and calculated d ata provides a better understanding in the molecular structure-quadrat ic hyperpolarizability relationship. The effect on the hyperpolarizabi lity of different acceptor substituents, multiple substitution and het eroaromatics is discussed. Finally, extension of the polyaryl conjugat ion path, up to four aryl units, is examined.
