Abstract
It is poorly known whether arctic-breeding shorebirds form pairs befor e or after arrival at the breeding site. We describe the display and m ate-guarding behavior of curlew sandpipers Calidris ferruginea at a st opover site in high arctic Siberia, suggesting that in this species pa irs may be formed before the birds reach their final nesting localitie s.
