Gas atomization as a rapid solidification technique can be used for th
e production of magnesium powders with median particle sizes about 30
mum and narrow size distribution. The pow er produced exhibit cellular
or dendritic structures with strong solid-solution supersaturation. T
he powders were consolidated by extrusion to dense rod material. Fined
isperse and homogenous structures with good mechanical properties were
achived. A tensile yield strength up to 390 MPa and a compression yie
ld strength of about 520 MPa were measured for Mg-Ca- and Mg-Al-Co-all
oys.
