Abstract
A prototype time projection chamber, constructed in acrylic in order t
o be used as a low radioactivity, low energy detector, is described. A
similar detector, of larger size, can be used in an experiment to sea
rch for rare events such as neutrinoless double beta decay. The behavi
our of the chamber, filled with 280 g of Xe + CF4 (5 %) at 5 bar, is d
iscussed together with the results obtained on the electron drift leng
th and on the energy resolution. The measurements on the scintillation
light of the gas are also presented.
