Ca. Skilbeck et M. Anderson, THE FINE-STRUCTURE OF GLANDULAR UNITS ON THE ANTENNAE OF 2 SPECIES OFTHE PARASITOID, ALEOCHARA (COLEOPTERA, STAPHYLINIDA), International journal of insect morphology & embryology, 23(4), 1994, pp. 319-328
The morphology of porous structures, common to the antennae of both ma
les and females of two species of Aleochara, with similar lifestyles,
is described. The ultrastructure of the underlying cells and their ass
ociated canals suggests a glandular function. These probable glandular
units are monocellular. A canal, with microvilli at its base, connect
s to pores on the external surface of the antenna. Some of the possibl
e functions of such glands are discussed.
