Abstract
The addition of azido- or chloroformates to 3-phenylazabicyclobutanes leading to derivatives of 1-carboalkoxy-3-azido(or chloro)azetidine ha s been studied. 3-Azido-3-phenylazetidines obtained as products of thi s reaction have been pyrolysed in the gas phase. It has been found, th at the nitrenes generated at 350-degrees-C undergo an intramolecular i nsertion to give the products of heterocyclic ring expansion. In the c ase of azetidine containing two methyl groups on the C(2) - atom, a co mpetitive insertion into C(3) - C6H5 bond has also been observed.
