Abstract
The specific mechanism of self-organization to a critical state is ide ntified for the Bak-Sneppen evolution model. This model is mapped exac tly to an underlying branching process. Theoretical arguments, support ed by numerical simulations, indicate that the resulting critical beha vior is in the same universality class as Reggeon field theory.
