Cr. Gordon et al., SEASICKNESS SUSCEPTIBILITY, PERSONALITY-FACTORS, AND SALIVATION, Aviation, space, and environmental medicine, 65(7), 1994, pp. 610-614
The present study investigates the possible relationship between motio
n sickness susceptibility, personality factors and salivation. Persona
lity factors, as evaluated by the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, a
nd salivary composition end flow were measured in a group of 29 subjec
ts highly susceptible to seasickness and in a group of 25 non-suscepti
ble subjects. The nonsusceptible group had significantly higher psycho
ticism scores and significantly lower salivary amylase levels compared
to the highly susceptible group. A significant positive correlation w
as found between psychoticism scores and the amount of the increase in
salivary flow in response to gustatory stimulation. These results pro
vide more delta in support of a connection between motion sickness sus
ceptibility, personality, and the autonomic nervous system.
