In September 1991, a mummified corpse was found in a small rock depres
sion at the Hauslabjoch, which is located in the Otztal Alps (part of
Similaun Massiv), South-Tyrol, Italy. To determine the absolute age of
the Ice Man, different samples were radiocarbon dated with AMS. In th
is work all available radiocarbon dates are compared and summarized to
determine the age of the Ice Man. The resulting time range for the Ic
e Man is then compared with the period of Late and Final Neolithic cul
tures in the Northern and Southern Alps. This allows a possible assign
ment to the cultural origin of the Ice Man.
