In the course of a seismic refraction/wide angle reflection experiment
in the eastern Mediterranean, an east-west reversed refraction profil
e was recorded onshore northern Israel. The purpose of the line was to
obtain reliable velocity and structural information about the crust i
n this area. In addition, a multi-coverage reflection profile was shot
over part of the refraction profile. The results indicate that the cr
ust in northern Israel is a high velocity continental crust, considera
bly thinner than the crust to the south. The reflection profile indica
tes an unusually reflective upper crust and a transparent lower crust
similar to those recorded at a number of compressional belts. The over
all results confirm the presence of a crust which is markedly differen
t from that encountered to the south, the provenance of which is proba
bly very different.
