Selective-etching methods have been developed for visualizing dislocat
ions and other defects in C60 single crystals. The nature of the chang
es which occur in the actual crystal structure as the result of plasti
c deformation during microindentation of the surface was studied. The
crystallography is analyzed. Aspects of dislocation glide and crack fo
rmation in C60 crystals are analyzed. Effects which result from holdin
g the samples in air at various temperatures and in a solvent are desc
ribed. Effects of illumination of the crystal with visible light are a
lso described.
