A 14-month-old female Domestic Shorthair cat was presented with bilate
rally shallow acetabuli, flattened femoral heads, and subluxation of t
he hips, changes consistent with hip dysplasia. Follow-up radiographs
showed additional osteophyte formation and remodeling of both coxofemo
ral joints. Two of her female littermate exhibited the same condition.
Pelvic examinations of a male from the same litter as well as those o
f the queen and two other 3-year-old offspring were normal. This repor
t demonstrates that it is likely that genetics plays a role in feline
hip dysplasia, although further detailed reports and similar investiga
tions of related cats affected by this condition are needed.
