A 72-year-old woman who had a history of arthritis and cerebral vascul
ar accident 4 years earlier underwent hand surgery. Because regional a
nesthesia was not successful, general anesthesia was administered. Sho
rtly before extubation, proptosis developed in her left eye, and she w
as unable to open it. The condition was due to spontaneous orbital hem
orrhage and resolved with conservative treatment.
