Negative anti-EBNA-1 was found more frequently among EBV-seropositive
patients with active hepatitis B virus infection than among patients w
ith recent HBV infection, HBs antigen carriers, or healthy control per
sons. Loss of anti-EBNA-1 during HBV infection points to a suppressive
effect of HBV on the cellular immune system. The resulting serodiagno
stic problem can be solved when HBV- and EBV-specific antibodies are d
etermined in parallel, including avidity determination of VCA-IgG.
