Abstract
The purpose of this study was to correlate the sonographic and histolo gic findings of focal lesions of the endometrium as depicted by transv aginal sonography. Sixteen focal endometrial masses were encountered d uring an 8 month period. The transvaginal sonographic appearance was c orrelated with findings at surgery or hysteroscopy. All uniformly hype rechoic endometrial masses were benign endometrial polyps. Five hetero geneous lesions were complicated endometrial polyps; one of these show ed a focus of endometrial carcinoma. Four small and uniformly hypoecho ic lesions were all prolapsed submucosal leiomyomata. Our results show ed that a well-defined, uniformly hyperechoic mass within the endometr ial cavity is most suggestive of a benign endometrial polyp. Larger ma sses with a heterogeneous appearance are nonspecific and warrant furth er evaluation and biopSy.
