Level lifetimes for the low-OMEGA pih9/2 and pii13/2 intruder bands in
179Ir up to spin 37/2 and 49/2, respectively, have been determined us
ing the recoil-distance and Doppler-shift attenuation methods. The res
ults reveal that transition quadrupole moments of the i13/2 band are a
lmost 30% larger than those of the h9/2 band. Furthermore, there is no
indication of rotational stretching. Lifetime results and total Routh
ian surface calculations are discussed in conjunction with the deforma
tion-driving effects of the different proton orbitals.
