Abstract
We consider the chiral expansion for the reaction piN --> pipiN in hea vy baryon chiral perturbation theory. To order M(pi) we derive novel l ow-energy theorems that compare favorably with recent determinations o f the total cross sections for pi+p --> pi+pi+n and pi-p --> pi0pi0n.
