Abstract
Data from literature and experimental findings on the cathodic reducti on of oxygen and oxyanions in oxygen-containing melts are analyzed. It is shown that oxyanions participate in the discharge step directly, w ithout a slow preceding chemical reaction. Consideration is given to t he side effects, due to which traditional approaches erroneously concl ude that the process in question involves a preceding step.
